Manchester United make decision on Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United will not pursue a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer despite the forward’s desire to leave Real Madrid, Metro.co.uk understands.
The 33-year-old is determined to end his nine-year stint at the Bernabeu and hinted his time was up at the club after their Champions League final win against Liverpool in May by saying it had been ‘very nice playing for Real Madrid’.
Ronaldo’s made similar statements in the past and United wrongly believed they had a chance of re-signing the Portugal star in 2017 as he threatened to walk out on Madrid over issues with tax authorities. However, Real Madrid’s determination to sign Neymar is genuine and the La Liga giants are reported to have agreed to sell Ronaldo to Juventus for €100m (£88m).
United have failed twice to re-sign Ronaldo since his departure to Spain in 2009 and could easily match Juventus’ bid and wages on offer. However, Metro.co.uk can reveal that Mourinho is not interested in signing Ronaldo and won’t use up his budget on sanctioning a move for the 33-year-old.
While the Red Devils would understandably be interested in a player of Ronaldo’s quality, the club handed record wages of nearly £400,000-a-week to Alexis Sanchez in January as well as Ronaldo’s former no.7 shirt. The club feel Sanchez will benefit from a tournament-free summer and the Chilean had the second half of last season to acclimatise to life at the Theatre of Dreams.
United have spent nearly £70m so far this summer to sign Fred and Portuguese youngster Diogo Dalot, leaving Mourinho with a remaining budget of around £90m.
The club are working on completing two deals before the start of the Premier League season with a centre-back and a back-up forward a priority for Mourinho. United are interested in signing Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld and Juventus ace Mario Mandzukic.
Meanwhile, Lee Grant completed his move to Old Trafford on Tuesday after signing a two-year deal with the club. The 35-year-old arrives as back-up to Sergio Romero and David De Gea and his arrival means Joel Pereira will be sent out on loan.
