Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State said only a consensus candidate at its December national convention could save the Peoples Democratic Party from further internal crisis.
He warned that the party may not be able to survive another crisis.
The governor spoke when the campaign team of Professor Tunde Adeniran visited him at the Government House in Jalingo.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, PDP chieftain and former Information minister, Professor Jerry Gana, pleaded with Governor Ishaku to talk to Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe state so that the North East can adopt Tunde Adeniran as the zone’s candidate.
Gana said their support for Adeniran is in line with the goal of identifying a credible man of vision, mission, ideology and skill to mount the leadership rostrum of the party ahead of the 2019 general poll.
Addressing them, Governor Ishaku thanked the delegation for the visit, noting that there is no gainsaying that their candidate has everything as a leader.
Darius says the PDP needs a man with character, courage and the capacity to galvanize and harmonise all and sundry. He pleaded with the party not to go to the convention as a divided house.
Many speakers at the occasion canvassed support for Adeniran to be given opportunity for repositioning of PDP ahead 2019 general polls. They hinged their position on his wide experience.
While speaking, Adeniran said he would change the party’s negative narrative if given the opportunity.
Political pundits believe that if the PDP can find a consensus candidate as its national chairman, as suggested by Governor Ishaku, it would cement unity in the party, ahead of 2019 general election
